 Sorry about the delay.....
- 14 Jul 2008
We'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to everyone who attended the Toots show last night for the very late starting time.
While the circumstances of Toots late arrival were beyond our control, we accept that the bands late arrival on stage led to some people being unable to stay and enjoy the gig and for this we are truly sorry.
Occassionally when bands travel long distances to play gigs, mess-ups like last nights sometimes happen.
Once again for those of you who couldn't stay, our most sincere apologies and to those who stayed on we hope it was worth the rather long wait.

Stand Up Showdown
Hosted by Damian Clark (I Dare Ya)
You’re on stage, all alone with a microphone. There are a hundred or so strangers in the room and you’ve got two minutes to make them laugh. Can you do it?
Quite a challenge eh? Perhaps not.
Sixteen of Ireland’s funniest comedians have agreed to go mano a mano, in a comedic war of wits until there’s only one left standing. This glorious victor will walk away with the spoils of war – bragging rights, a bag of cash for themselves, a big fat cheque for their favourite charity and filthy looks from their losers friends.
Here’s the plan of battle.
On Easter Sunday at 4pm the sixteen comics will assemble in the Roisin Dubh. Damian Clark will host the evening and do his damnedest to whip the audience into a froth of unimaginable glee.
Each comedian gets just two minutes to impress the audience, and then half are eliminated by audience vote.
The eight survivors get an extra minute for their next set (three minutes), and then they’re reduced by half to four.
Those four semi finalists get four minutes each and then the audience cut it down to two.
In our final round these two fine warriors of wit have five minutes each to impress you. The loser should slink off into the night while the winner sobs ‘You love me, you really really love me.’ in a glorious pastiche of some tit at the Oscars years ago.
Acts already confirmed include Karl Spain (Wants a woman), Eric Lalor (Joy in the Hood), Robbie Bonham (98 FM's 'Dublin's Best Comedian'), Sharon Mannion (Runner-up in the 2007 Funny Women (UK & Ireland) competition & "Friends of Ted - Toilet Duck Award" winner 07), Kieran Lawless (Bulmers comedy competition winner 07), Jason Coughlan (resident MC, City Limits Cork), Fred Cooke, John Donnellan (Local comedian and rising star) plus more of the usual suspects and hopefully a surprise or two.

Galway comedy festival & The Laughter Lounge presents...
IF.COMEDY Winner Edinburgh Fringe 2007 (formerly the Perrier Award)
Brendon Burns
Fresh from his triumphant run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he was awarded comedy’s highest accolade, The If.comedy award, Brendon Burns tour is taking him to Galway.
For the last sixteen years, Brendon Burns has stormed audiences the world over. His stage presence is electric, his material provocative and his insight surprisingly subtle. He uses his confrontational and up-front style of comedy to capture his audience with a proverbial slap in the face. He is neither politically correct nor incorrect making him a rare socio-political comic willing to oppose all schools of thought. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that Burns has been compared to such legends as: Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks.
Brendon has courted controversy wherever he’s been. He once got banned from BBC television for snogging a goat live on air, he handed out enough mushrooms at the Glastonbury festival to get a thousand people high because Bill Hicks and John Lennon talked about it but didn’t, he wrote a trilogy that sent him clinically mad and was committed to a mental institution, he walked off the set of “Help I’m a celebrity get me out of here NOW” live on air after just three days, and now Britain’s most controversial comedian embarks on his second UK national tour.
"You have only ever really toked on pure socio-political comedy. With Brendon you are mainlining, and the hit is a feeling I will never, ever forget, the smartest thing I have ever seen in the comedy section " ***** (Kate Copstick, The Scotsman)
Support from Robbie Bonham Warrior. Lover. Nerd & Winner - 98FM's 'Dublin's Best Comedian'
"Quirky, zany, and, most importantly, funny" - Capital magazine
Guest MC Eric Lalor (first seen on “Joy in the hood” – Des Bishop's RTE TV Show)
"Flawless...it's like Rab C got Irish, got eloquent, but stayed scum" - Chortle UK
Open Spot From Brian Connolly - "3 time Battle of the Axe winner",
"best first gig I've ever seen"- PJ Gallagher!!!

Strange Brew Presents EDAN in March
- 24 Jan 2008
Critically acclaimed Boston based rapper-producer-DJ-historian Edan Portnoy made a dent on the underground hip-hop scene in 1999 with the twelve-inch Sing it Shitface, but it wasn't until his first release on Lewis Recordings that Edan garnered interest from both rock and hip-hop circles first in the UK then later, in his native US. Primitive Plus introduced Edan's unique and irreverent take on hip-hop's past while his next album Beauty and the Beat saw him successfully incorporating elements of 60's psychedelia. Both albums were showered with praise, cementing Edan's reputation as one of the most daring and adventurous artists in modern day hip-hop. He plays on March 13th. Tickets on sale now.

José González for the Black Box in April
- 12 Jan 2008
It is four years since Veneer, his first album, was released. During that time a lot has happened: record breaking sales, European, North-American, Asian and South-American tours, a shower of awards and the song Heartbeats being featured in the Sony Bravia commercial. That particular song quickly made José González known outside of the indie circuit around the world, and most people that heard it wanted to know more. Famed for his trademark solo classical guitar with soft vocal melody José González has covered such hits as Joy Divisions Love Will Tear Us Apart, Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen and Teardop by Massive Attack. Tickets are now on sale for his fully seated show at the Black Box on April 5th.

 Jonathan Richman in May!
- 12 Jan 2008
While he may feel that he's just coming to grips with the recording medium, the records that Jonathan Richman has made over the past 30 years have long held a special place in the hearts of his fans. He began playing guitar at the age of 15, and in the early 1970s formed the Modern Lovers, whose raw, minimalist sound and emotionally forthright songs helped to lay the groundwork for punk rock. But by the time the group's landmark debut album (including the much-covered 'Road Runner,' a Top Five single in Europe) was released in 1976, Jonathan had already moved on to a quieter sound and a gentler lyrical focus. Since then, he's continued to record and tour prolifically, first with a series of Modern Lovers lineups, later on his own, and eventually as a duo with drummer Larkins. Over the years, Jonathan's music has absorbed a multitude of influences, from doo-wop to country to a variety of international styles, without sacrificing the artist's effervescent personality. Tickets are now on sale for his show on May 12th

 Teddy Thompson confirmed
- 12 Jan 2008
“As strange as it may seem, country music was the music I was brought up on,” says the Englishman, whose parents are British folk-rock legends Richard and Linda Thompson. “It's the music that's closest to my heart and the music that speaks to me the most, and it's always been a big influence on my own songwriting. I was obsessed with country music when I was a kid, and it's definitely had a huge influence on the way I write songs. I was always obsessed with songs that had a brilliant pun or a clever turn of phrase, but came from a dark, bitter place. As a writer, I've always gravitated towards that feeling.” See Teddy Thomspon on April 11th

 The Pale album launch
- 22 May 2007
The Pale formed in Dublin in 1990 with Matthew Devereux on vocals Shane Wearen on Mandolins and a cheap as chips drum machine taking care of the beats. They released an award winning debut album on A&M records in 1992 called (Here's one we made earlier) The debut album and live shows received critical praise internationally. The singles from that debut (Dogs with no tails) (Butterfly) and (Shut up venus) did well in both Ireland and the UK. The highest chart positions came in Turkey, Israel and France and has given rise to succesfull cover versions of their songs released in Turkey over the last decade. As the group have toured they have added and subtracted instruments and players to the line-up. The mainstay of the group has remained to be the unique sound conjured up by Matthew and Shane. The Sound of the group is one of ethnic fusion and is often referred to as eclectic and quirky. Over the years The Pale have recorded five live sessions for RTE radio and a further two for BBC radio. The most recent session was recorded for John Kelly's The Mystery Train. The Pale are set to release a new Album. It will be released on 1969 records and distributed by RMG . Wednesday 2nd May 2007
9pm, € 12.50 / 10 (members) / 7.50 (online)
The Laughter Lounge presents
Jim Jeffries (Aus) - Hailing from Perth, the one in Western Australia, Jim has come a long way since he did his first ever comedy spot in Sydney at the age of 17. He has won the Perth Comic of the Year 2000, and is a celebrity in the city. Although as he says, even local newsreaders are celebrities in Perth.
Recently attacked onstage in the Comedy Store, Manchester, and already viewed by over 2million people, check it out yourself at: youtube.com/watch?v=2WCGKb8ikRc, Jim is regarded as one of the fastest rising stars in the comedy world.
But something is very wrong with his moral compass, that’s for sure. Taken at face value, his flagrantly distasteful set squeezes every trigger of knee-jerk liberal offence. It’s a catalogue of PC no-nos: from unabashedly misogynistic gags about women’s genitals to mocking the disabled, proving that this coarse Australian considers no topic too impolite to joke about.
But somehow he gets away with this taboo-busting tirade and few take genuine offence. Sure you’ll hear sharp intakes of breath mixed in with the shocked laughter, but there’s never any doubt these are only gags. Maybe it’s the sheer audacity of the depths of bad taste to which he’ll plunge, or maybe it’s his slightly awkward, socially screwed-up persona. Either way, it’s obvious he’s no role model and his provocative views are not to be taken seriously. Jim's brash confrontational style has made him one of the most sought after comics on the world stage. He gets away with jokes that most comedians would not want to touch due to his ability to both charm and offend the crowd through equal measures. Definitely not for the prudish.
Robbie Bonham Warrior. Lover. Nerd & Winner - 98FM's 'Dublin's Best Comedian'
"Quirky, zany, and, most importantly, funny" - Capital magazine

"Comedy Store Players - A supportive crowd wills on six brave performers who arrive with no script and not the faintest idea of what will happen. Through improvisation they create whole sketches and comic dramas that are amazingly inventive and sometimes take off into flights of surreal brilliance. Whose Line Is it Anyway is a pale TV imitation."
