Róisín Dubh & Galway Arts Festival are proud to present CHIC & special guests on Thursday July 19th 2012.
Arguably the greatest disco/funk band of all time, CHIC debuted in the late 1970s, dominating, and rejuvenating, the fading disco scene. Their distinctive approach, categorized by Nile Rodger’s rhythm guitar, not only resulted in some of the most successful singles of the era, but also helped to lay the groundwork for some of the most successful musical styles of the 1980s.
Their first singles were runaway club smash hits, but it was their second album, C’est Chic, and the first single from it, “Le Freak”, that cemented their position as the kings of disco. The second single, “I Want Your Love” helped the album become one of the only disco albums ever to go platinum. Follow up single, “Good Times”, even managed to survive the Disco Sucks backlash in 1979 and reach number one.
The success of CHIC's first singles led Atlantic to offer Chic’s Rodgers and Edwards the opportunity to produce any act on its roster. They chose Sister Sledge, and the rest is history. The 1978 album, We Are Family, peaked at #3 and remained on the charts well into 1979. The first two singles, "He's The Greatest Dancer" and the title cut “We Are Family” both reached #1 on the R&B chart, and #6 and #2, respectively on the Pop chart.
The 1980s saw Rodgers & Edwards move more into production work, becoming involved with some of the biggest records of the era. In 1980 they wrote and produced the album Diana for Diana Ross, yielding the smash hits “Upside Down” and “I'm Coming Out.” CHIC’s song "Good Times" played a pivotal role in the explosion of Hip Hop music, as an interpolation of the song's bass-line and the record’s string-section sample, was the bedrock of The Sugarhill Gang's “A Rapper's Delight” – the first multiple-platinum Hip Hop single. Edwards' infectious bass-line also influenced Queen’s largest selling single – the1980 hit "Another One Bites The Dust”.
In addition to this, Rodgers rounded off the decade by producing the likes of Madonna’s Material Girl, David Bowie’s Let’s Dance as well as seminal works by Duran Duran,Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger and many others, as well as a lucrative career in movie soundtracks.
What can you expect from CHIC’s performance at the Galway Arts Festival Big Top? Well, if their incredible live show at the Electric Picnic in 2009 is anything to go by, we can expect an incredible show from one of the greatest party bands of all time.
Freak out!

Midlake stays ahead of its own time by making music that transcends it. The Denton, Texas band's 2006 release The Trails of Van Occupanther got fans and bloggers re-evalutating dormant ancestors like Fleetwood Mac, America, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Bread - music that has been embedded in the indie worlds unconscious (Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear) ever since. On their 2010 release The Courage of Others, Midlake reinvented themselves with influences from British folk to Russian Cinema - and received rave reviews culminating in the band being named Best Live Act by Mojo Magazine. + More
